BAC Client Success Story: Play Cafe Peterborough

Last summer, Sarah Susnar opened Play Cafe – a great space for families to enjoy together – kids can play and create while parents enjoy some much deserved “me time”. As a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a young family of her own, Sarah decided to open Play Cafe in order to enjoy the flexibility of being her own boss. Peterborough Economic Development’s Business Advisory Centre was here to help Sarah as she started on her path to being an entrepreneur.

We sat down with Sarah to learn more about her and her business, this is what we learned about her business:

How do you describe your business?

I describe my business as a cozy family friendly cafe with a play area and creative studio, that hosts classes, events, and parties. We have delicious coffee, tea, espresso and specialty drinks, and we carry yummy treats from local vendors.

What influenced your decision to open your own business?

My passion for working with children, being my own boss, and wanting the flexibility to be there for my own children influenced my decision to open my own business.

What makes Peterborough a great place to be a business owner?

Peterborough is an amazing place to be a business owner because there is so much support for every part of the journey through different programs, as well as from other local businesses.

How did the Business Advisory Centre help you?

The Business Advisory Centre helped me make a solid business plan, answered my questions about hiring staff, and cheered me on when I hit a bump in the road (there were many).

What’s next (how will your business continue to grow/evolve)?

My business continues to evolve every week as I realize what works and what doesn’t for the Peterborough community. We will offer more programs and continue to grow the amount of instructors and community partners that we work with. We also plan to grow our retail section to offer more toys and craft kits.

What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs?

My advice would be to not give up when you hit a bump in the road. There is so much support in Peterborough for you to receive and a great place to start is the Business Advisory Centre.

Have you checked out Play Cafe in the Brookdale Plaza on Chemong Road yet? With March Break starting on Monday, they have some great programming coming up to check out with your school-aged kids. They also offer classes and workshops for fun-loving folks of all ages.
