East City Studios: A Summer Company Story

Through Summer Company, David Bigg of East City Studios is experimenting with entrepreneurship as a way of testing the waters for future career plans. “My love of music and art are what inspired me to start my business. I would like to be able to support myself with both of these things as an adult. ” explains David, “I thought this was the best way to find out if this was the right career for me.”

East City Studios specializes in unique handcrafted instruments, hand-bound books and original artwork. Most instruments incorporate antique, vintage or upcycled elements; ink and egg tempera paintings and interesting wood combinations. The handbound books feature beautiful handmade paper and the orginal artwork ranges from lino prints and ink paintings to film photography.

David has found a tremendous amount of support in Peterborough’s local business community, stating that he has a lot of love for his hometown and its great arts scene. He has also found the support from PED’s Business Advisory Centre to be encouraging and instrumental to setting up his business. Creating a business plan was something outside of his comfort zone, and he was glad to have the support, encouragement and advice of the staff.

When asked how he defines success, David answers: “My definition of success is always expanding your horizons. When you make a mistake (and you should make lots), learn from it, and next time make a different one instead.
