Peterborough Leading the Way for Drinking Water Treatment

By Kelly Jessup

A Sneak Peek of Peterborough Pilot Plant for Drinking Water Treatment Optimization

The increased demand for improved water quality for consumers has resulted in exceptional water treatment challenges for the drinking water industry around the world.

The Peterborough region has always recognized the socioeconomic value, environmental importance and priority that water quality has in economic development from a global, national, provincial and regional perspective.

In 2010, Peterborough completed a state-of-the-art pilot plant designed to improve the quality of drinking water, reduce operational costs, while also serving to minimize the impact of water treatment on the environment.

The pilot plant represents a scaled-down version of the conventional Peterborough water treatment plant, which includes coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and dual-media filtration. The objectives of this study are as follows:

  • improve water quality (coagulation optimization studies, Biofiltration enhancement studies, quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA_)
  • process optimization
  • advanced treatment (ozone pilot plant, on-line distribution UV monitoring)
  • streamline operations
  • training & education

Peterborough Economic Development Gets A Behind-the-Scenes Look

On May 12, 2015, we met with Kevan Light, Superintendent of Peterborough Water Treatment Plant and John Armour, Water Quality Specialist. During the meeting we learned that the pilot plant plays a key role in allowing Peterborough to conduct trial studies and act as a “data collection centre” with 50,000 to 100,000 data points per day! The studies provide infinitive qualitative and quantitative inputs to Peterborough Utilities Group, the business community, and the research community at large.

Why Peterborough?

Peterborough is leading the way in Water Quality and Treatment, through dedicated pilot infrastructures and research centres such as the Water Quality Centre, Peterborough acknowledges the positive impact that research and innovation have on business development, job creation, community enhancement and education and training.
