Janine Morrison has had a lifelong passion for photography, and she decided to turn that passion into a business this summer while continuing her studies at Fleming College in the fall. We sat down with Janine and learned how her business Up Close Imaging became a reality.
Q. How would you describe your business and the products or services you offer?
A. Up Close Imaging is a new kind of photography service. We offer on site photography both big & small. For the businesses in the community, we offer photo books to professionally display your products or services. We take beautiful photos you’ve taken that are just hiding on your phone and turn them into a photo book you can share with family and friends.
Q. What influenced your decision to start Up Close Imaging?
A. I grew up seeing my mom being an entrepreneur herself, she started many of her own business, and I was inspired by the love she had for the business she ran and the many smiles she put on peoples faces. I knew that I wanted to run my own business when I got older. Since photography has been a passion from a very young age, and as I’ve grown up I’ve learned more and more about it and the techniques and styles. As much as I love taking pictures for my own personal enjoyment, I didn’t want to keep my knowledge all for myself. I started my business to provide other people with a platform for sharing their photos in a special way.
Q. What makes Peterborough & the Kawarthas a great place to be an entrepreneur?
A. Being a new resident to this area I think it is a great place for entrepreneurs. It’s a big town with a small town feel. There are so many family owned business and successful entrepreneurs in the community. With all this inspiration and support it makes the big jump to starting your business feel achievable and less overwhelming. Knowing you have people around to help you along the way is so reassuring.
Q. How has the Business Advisory Centre helped you?
A. The Business Advisory Centre helped me feel that the big task of starting my business was achievable and it was great to know I had support a long the way. It was also great to meet mentors and attend the workshops to help become more knowledgeable about starting and running a business. The Summer Company program funding allowed me to get a higher quality camera and lenses to be able to provide my clients with better quality pictures. I was also able to buy advertising material to be able to promote my business and get my name out to the community.
Q. What’s next for you? How will Up Close Imaging continue to grow?
A. The next steps for me are to network with locals to get the Up Close Imaging name more well known. I also hope to get my photo book services known outside of Ontario. I also want to look into starting to sell my photographs.
Q. What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs?
A. To those new & aspiring entrepreneurs out there my advice to you would be, don’t be scared to take the first steps to start you business. It may seem like a huge undertaking, but the pay off of seeing your clients so happy with the service or product you provide them, makes all the hard work worth it. I also recommend to be open to learning from other people you meet and be open to suggestions and change.
Q. What is your personal definition of “success”?
A. Success to me is achieving the goals you lay out for yourself, and following your dreams. If you are happy with the things you have accomplished and that path you are on, to me that is success.
