Chalk Therapy – Starter Company Plus Success Story

We reached out to TaraLee Genge, the owner of Chalk Therapy to talk about the idea of breathing new life into old furniture, up-cycling, and being an entrepreneur in Peterborough & the Kawarthas.

What kind of business do you run?

Chalk Therapy is an eco-friendly furniture store that offers DIY products such as Country Chic & Fusion Mineral Paints, supplies, customized furniture refinishing, and workshops for home decor.

Why did you decide to work with Peterborough & the Kawarthas Business Advisory Centre?

We began with Peterborough & the Kawarthas Business Advisory Centre after entering into Win This Space. Initially, we were unsure if the centre was for businesses like ourselves: small, start-up, and unsure of what steps to take. After getting our foot in the door, we learned it what right where we needed to be as we were beginning to take the steps to open our own location.

What have you learned from working with us?

Many valuable lessons were learned during our time with Sandy & Madeleine in the Business Advisory Centre. It would have taken a lot of our time, and a lot of money to learn from the “figure it out as you go along approach.” Learning from others experiences has been invaluable.

What would you say to other aspiring entrepreneurs facing challenges similar to yours?

My advice to new entrepreneurs would be to definitely make your business plan as accurate as possible. Update it when something changes, as nothing will go as planned. Keep yourself organized, and don’t spread yourself too thin. Trying to take everything on yourself is how mistakes are made. Forgetting to do one thing, might snowball to another, so don’t be afraid to ask for help!

There are many resources available here in Peterborough, and even if it costs you money, how much of your valuable time has been saved? Talk to people, tell them what you need, tell them what you’re moving forward with, and what your possible challenges are. Peterborough is a small town, many are happy to help, or direct you to someone who can!

Lastly: You know your business the most. Many people will try to change it the way they see it, to what they want- Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’. Keep suggestions in mind of course, but stick to your plan.
